A novel of Charleston, South Carolina by a Caucasian native, who focused on the lives on African-Americans in his writings. Hayward also wrote 'Porgy' (with Dorothy Hayward), a play in four acts that became the basis for the Gershwin musical 'Porgy and Bess' (starring Ethel Merman, as Mamba). Heyward wrote most of the play's lyrics - including 'Summertime' - and his libretto crowned his career. Handsome copy of this important American work.
